The best donuts in California remind us to keep it simple.

Jim Nakano and his wife Miyoko make the best donuts in California. It all started in Glendora , California off of a desolate stretch of Route 66. Jim was just out of the Navy and the couple had purchased rights to the franchise Foster’s Donuts in 1972. They began experimenting with flavors and styles and quickly became known as the place to go for the best donuts around.

Cook with the seasons: Their most famous donut, which is brimming with gorgeous fresh strawberries was created during an abundant season for the surrounding strawberry fields. The famous stuffed donuts also come stuffed with seasonal peaches. See the full photo menu here.

Keep it simple: Jim began tinkering with recipes during that abundant strawberry season. He needed to make sure the end result wasn’t too sweet and allowed the fruit to shine. Nothing about the recipe is complicated. It’s just carefully designed and replicated the same way every time and made with the best ingredients.

What’s inside?

Filling: Berries, sugar, starch, water, salt, and a little food color (you eat with your eyes first!)

Donut: Potato and wheat flour, yeast, milk, eggs, baking soda and powder. Very important, they are fried in clean fryer oil.

Glaze: Powdered sugar, water.

Best of all, you get to watch while you wait. They make all the donuts on site and while your’e waiting to order, you can be mesmerized by tiger tails dipping, dough being cut, and berries being stuffed. They make donuts around the clock to keep things fresh and stay up with demand.
